UPDATE: During their special meeting on May 15th the Board of Trustees considered the proposed changes to the 2018-2019 bus routes. The board voted to continue the discussion to their policy meeting which is scheduled for May 30th at 12:00 noon.
The continuation will allow administration time to explore creative solutions for activity bus service from JES to Snow King, Center for the Arts, and St John's Hospital. No changes are being proposed for the CES or WES activity bus. An activity bus will be offered from MMES next year as well.
During their regular meeting this week, the Board of Trustees reviewed the proposed bus routes for the 2018-2019 school year. The proposed plan includes changes to some of the bus stop locations for Jackson Elementary and Colter Elementary Schools. The Board will take action to adopt bus routes during a Special Meeting on Tuesday, May 15th at 6:00 p.m. at the TCSD District Office at 1235 Gregory lane.
The State of Wyoming sets regulations regarding when students are eligible for bus transportation to school. Wyoming State Code Chapter 20 states that students who live within certain distances from their school shall walk, with bus transportation provided for those who live outside of the walk radius.
The state has set the following minimum walk radius:
Elementary schools: 1 mile walk radius
Middle schools: 1.5 mile walk radius
High school: 2 mile walk radius
A school district may make adjustments to these walk zones if the school board has determined that it is unsafe for students to walk. Such exemptions may include crossing a highway, lack of sidewalks, or other safety hazards.
Over the last several years the Town of Jackson has made significant investment in expanding sidewalks and the walkability within the town of Jackson. With these enhancements in mind the district revisited the current walk radii for JES and CES to ensure that our designated bus stops and walk zones adhere to state regulations.
The attached maps (JES Map CES Map) show the bus stop locations that may be eliminated for the upcoming school year. Later this summer specific bus route information will be mailed to those students who will be provided bus transportation for the 2018-2019 school year. Please note that the after school activity bus stops for Jackson Elementary School will be adjusted to align with the walk zones so we will discontinue stops at St. John’s Medical Center, Snow King and the Center for the Arts.
Please know that our first priority is always student safety. With this in mind, the district will add one crossing guard for both JES and CES at key intersections to ensure students are able to safely cross roadways.
We understand changes, such as these proposed impact family schedules and planning. We appreciate your understanding as we implement the rules we must follow regarding bus transportation.
