Superintendent Comments on Thursday Incident
Sunday, September 11th, 2016
Dear Parents and Guardians:
It is my pleasure to provide a quick recap of the first week of the 2016-2017 school year.

I enjoyed visiting all nine of our schools this week and I am happy to report that our teachers are excited to have students back in their classrooms and have already jumped in to creating dynamic, exciting, and engaging educational environments for every student.

I know many of you have questions about the incident on Thursday and I understand your concerns. On Thursday afternoon local law enforcement notified district staff of a general threat in Jackson area schools. The details about the threat and the subsequent investigation is a law enforcement issue, which is outside our scope.

Our staff responded quickly, with what we considered an appropriate response to ensure student safety, which is our highest priority. We worked collaboratively with local law enforcement throughout the afternoon and trust that their follow up efforts are continuing.

We recognize that this was a stressful situation for everyone, and as a parent/guardian I know it is alarming to hear when there is a situation possibly occurring in your student's school. Every member of our staff takes our responsibility for student safety very, very seriously.

We certainly hope that we never again have an incident like we did on Thursday, but we must be prepared for any possibility. Be assured that we have processes and protocols in place to provide for student safety in an uncertain world and we are carefully reviewing our processes and protocols to learn from this incident to identify what we did well and to immediately address any areas for improvement. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have additional questions about this effort.

As we look ahead to welcoming students to the 2nd week of school we are celebrating Broncs Week. Please mark your calendars for the Homecoming Football Game Friday night at 7 pm. Alumni who attend the game should stop by the booth at the entrance to pick up a special gift.

While I recognize Thursday's events added some very unfortunate stress to the start of the school year, we are committed to helping every students feel academically, socially and emotionally supported and successful.

Have enjoyable weekend and we look forward to seeing you and your student next week. Thank you for your continued support.
