<![CDATA[Dear Parents,
I apologize for not including some very exciting news in this morning’s Bell Ringer!
Last week, the Teton County Recreation District funded our school’s playground project for the entire requested amount! Combined with the funds PTO and Old Bill's have raised over the past year, we now have enough money to purchase playground equipment that our students will be able to enjoy next fall!
In the next week or so, our playground committee student representatives will visit all classrooms to share the “top 2” playground configurations the committee chose, and get input from all students on their favorite. The reps will also prepare a display of these top choices for the hallway, for parents to view and provide input as well.
Stay tuned for updates, and thanks to the many families who supported our playground fundraising efforts!
Thanks,
Tracy]]>

Happenings at Wilson School:
It’s evident that May is a busy month here at Wilson!
-Last week, Luis Guerrero visited our 4th graders during their Spanish class with Maestra Peralta to create a bilingual poem to describe the movements of their totem animals.
-Mrs. Kitto’s “cooked up” their first batch of compost for our spring garden season. Thanks to a donation many years ago, we have 2 electric composters that take food scraps from lunch and in one week’s time, make a batch of compost! They are very energy efficient, each using less energy than a nightlight.
-April is National Poetry Month. See the attached photo of a poem written by 2nd graders on “Poem in Your Pocket Day,” which was April 18th.
-Fred Kingwill begins his 5-visit series this week with 3rd grade students as they learn the art of watercolor painting.
-Kindergarteners visit the raptor center on Tuesday as an enhancement to their study of birds of prey.
-Also on Tuesday, first graders begin their pARTners photography project, which focuses on photographing patterns in nature.
-On Wednesday, fourth graders join other 4th graders around the district at the Wildlife Expo at the visitor’s center. Also, our fifth graders take a trip to the middle school to begin their transition to sixth grade!
-Cross your fingers for sunshine on Thursday as all students participate in ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously).

ACES (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) and "Let’s Move Wyoming" supported by the Governor's Council - Thursday May 2nd
This program kicks off the month of May, which is National Physical Fitness and Sport month. Children all over the world participate in Project ACES, calling this the world’s largest exercise class. ACES aims to educate children about the importance of lifelong fitness which is an important part of our Physical Education Mission to be fit, strong and healthy so we can ski when were 80!! This year, the Governors Council has challenged all schools in Wyoming to do an all school activity called "Let’s Move Wyoming!” Our ACES program is right on!!!

"Physical Activity isn’t an option, it’s a necessity. Help our kids reach their greatest potential. Only 6 states require physical education in every grade and only 20% of school districts require daily recess. Only 1 in 3 kids is active every day. ACTIVE KIDS PERFORM BETTER. Active kids increase concentration and attention and up to 40% will have higher test scores." Governors Council Wyoming

All students participate in an activity: Parents are welcome to join!
K and 1st grade: can either walk or jog on the bike path (2:30-3:00).
2nd-5th grade : can either walk, jog, rollerblade, scooter or ride a bike (2:00-3:00).

***Helpful Tips**
Students riding a bike must have a helmet.
Check your bike to make sure it is in good working order. Tires pumped etc...
Rollerbladers must have all protective gear.
Bring a camel back or water bottle, you will get thirsty.
Wear appropriate clothing for the weather, coats, gloves etc..

Wilson School Vision - Wilson Elementary School provides students with learning experiences to grow academically, socially, and physically toward becoming productive global citizens.

This week at Wilson School:
-Happy Earth Day! - Six years ago, efforts made by the second graders inspired Mrs. Hudacsko to write a grant for funds to initiate a recycling program for our cafeteria. Grant money was used to purchase biodegradable trash bags and recycling bins for the cafeteria. We also purchased materials for our garden. Today, our second graders will reteach the K-2 kids how to recycle. Thanks to our 2nd graders for their efforts in helping our school to be a more environmentally friendly place through recycling!
-3rd – 5th graders will take the state writing assessment, SAWS. The assessment is a combination of prompts to be field tested, and others that will be graded. I suspect results will come out later in the summer with PAWS.
-Wilson Walkers and Joggers begins today!
-3rd – 5th graders (wow, a busy week for them!) show off their musical talents during their Music Informances.
-Our 3rd graders will perform Celestial Moves (as part of their solar system study) on Friday.

Wilson School Vision - Wilson Elementary School provides students with learning experiences to grow academically, socially, and physically toward becoming productive global citizens.

It was a great first week back to school! The kids were ready to be back in school. We had some of best attendance and low tardy days of the year last week!

This week at Wilson School:
-Last week, our 3rd graders began a pARTners project with the Mobius curriculum, Celestial Moves. The project is designed to incorporate movement in their study of the solar system; it will culminate in a presentation on April 26th.

Congratulations to our Young Authors Winners!
Many congrats to two 3rd graders, whose writing took top honors in our district judging: Addie Robertson with poetry, and Beckett Lucas-Griffin with fiction. Their writing will now advance to the state level.

It’s Still Big 5 Season!
Just a reminder, the Big 5 is required anytime there is snow on the ground. Please be sure your child is equipped with the appropriate outerwear each day. Thanks!
On another note, there are many coats, snowpants, gloves, and boots in our lost and found. Please encourage your child, or stop by yourself, and take a look for any missing winter clothes.

Parking around Wilson School
Just a reminder to please obey all “no parking” signs when parking on HHR Ranch Rd. They are placed to ensure that our school buses have plenty of clearance when making the turn out of the bus circle. Thank you!

Thank you to parents who attended last Thursday’s workshop:
Supporting the Social and Emotional Development of your Child!
If you missed it, attached is information that will teach you more about our school’s social and emotional learning curriculum, Second Step. The attached letter gives you information about the curriculum and the “activation key” to create your own Second Step account that allows you to access information and resources that can help you reinforce social and emotional concepts that your child is learning at school! Log on to www.secondstep.org to find out how you can help your child effectively use empathy, compassion, emotions management skills and problem solving skills!
Specifically, check out the “Homelinks” in the printable section. Each “Homelink” coordinates with a lesson taught in the classroom. Currently, most classrooms are working on learning to Calm Down and Problem Solve effectively. The “Homelinks” that coordinate with these topics are labeled numbers 15-17 for each grade level. Check them out and try one with your child!
For more information or questions about Second Step or how to access the resources please call, email, or stop in! Thanks - Miss Nial Overbay, noverbay@tcsd.org

Wilson School Vision - Wilson Elementary School provides students with learning experiences to grow academically, socially, and physically toward becoming productive global citizens.

This week at Wilson School:
-Last week, all 3rd graders received a dictionary from the Rotary Supper Club. They learned that the longest word in the English language has 1,909 letters! See the attached picture of students receiving their dictionaries.
-Students in grades 3-5 take the PAWS test. Teachers sent home reminders in their newsletters about exact testing times, and ways you can support your student at home next week.
-K and 1st grade students visit the Center for the Arts to watch The Little Engine that Could.
-Parent Outreach – “Supporting the Social and Emotional Development of Your Child” – Thursday at 12:15 in the library. We hope you can make it!
-A fun tradition continues - staff vs. 5th grade volleyball game on Friday at 2:30!

BINGO Night a Success
BINGO night was a hit, with over 110 players in attendance :) Many thanks to the PTO and chairpersons Nancy Seaton and Anna Sullivan. Attached is a thank-you recognizing local businesses that supported the event as well as the many families who helped make it a great family fun night!

PAWS Testing
All 3rd – 5th grade students will be PAWS testing every day this week. PAWS is Wyoming’s test to assess a student’s proficiency on the learning standards, and we feel the students are well prepared and ready to take it! Results are typically ready in late summer, so expect to receive your child’s PAWS scores early in the school year. We appreciate your support at home by ensuring a good night’s rest and a nutritious breakfast! For more information on PAWS, visit http://edu.wyoming.gov/Programs/statewide_assessment_system/paws.aspx.
