Guest speakers, who are professionals in various career fields, visit AVID classes and talk about their career, educational backgrounds, and how they prepared for college and their career. Guest speakers will also share words of encouragement and inspiration and advice.

AVID students visit career sites in the community such as hospitals, hotels, restaurants, businesses. Students will learn about how the organization runs, different types of careers within the organization, and educational requirements. Students will have opportunities to experience the career demands.

AVID students visit colleges and universities to learn about academic requirements, campus life, classes and majors offered, scholarships and how they can achieve college success.

AVID students participate in leadership and team building activities, enrichment opportunities, and community service.

AVID Tutors - Job Description:

Date Closing: Open until filled

Pay: $25/hour

Description: AVID tutors work in AVID classrooms in JHMS, SIS, and/or JHHS. The pay is $25/hour.

Job Summary:
-
Attend required #hours of AVID tutor training.
-
Conduct weekly binder checks.
-
2 times a week, facilitate small group tutorial sessions using AVID methods using their knowledge and experience.
-
Create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions such that they build confidence to ask questions in other academic settings.
-
Communicate regularly with AVID teachers and AVID district directors regarding students’ progress and areas of concern.
-
Follow all AVID and school rules and policies.
-
Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students.
-
Act as a resource and role model for AVID students both academically and socially.
-
May have opportunities to assist at AVID special events.
-
May have opportunities to chaperone AVID field trips.

Qualifications:
-
College student in good academic standing or College graduate.
-
Must have a strong academic background as evidenced by a college transcript.
