Preparing for Kindergarten

Every day is full of learning and fun! Students attend a full day, five days per week Kindergarten program. School day start and end times vary depending on school location. Please visit your child's school page for start and end times. If you are unsure of which school your child will attend, visit the TCSD Transportation page here.
Kindergarteners explore reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and social skills through hands-on activities in both small and large groups. At the beginning of the year, children learn routines, expectations, and build a strong classroom community.

Daily Highlights

  • All-day Academic Program: No nap time

  • Specials: Art, Music, P.E., Spanish, Library, and Computer (schedule provided by your teacher)

  • Recess: At least twice a day for outdoor play

  • Lunch: 25 minutes in the cafeteria — pack a lunch or buy a school lunch

  • Dismissal: Teachers walk students out for parent pick-up, bus, or after-school clubs

Attendance Matters

Being at school every day and on time helps your child grow, learn, and feel confident! Check out your elementary school’s start time below. Research shows that one-third of chronically absent preschool 4 year olds (missing 10% or more of the school year) continue to be chronically absent in Kindergarten. Of those students, more than 30% are still chronically absent in second grade. This has a direct and negative impact on student reading levels. ** Attendance at school is expected to be above 94%.

Below are links to each of our seven elementary schools. All schools except Munger Mountain Elementary School are "neighborhood schools" meaning the school your child attends is based on where you live. Munger Mountain Elementary Schools is the dual immersion school and attendance is based on an application process.

Parent Tips:

  • Talk with your child about how the Kindergarten day will look. Visit your child’s elementary school and play on the playground prior to the first day of school.
  • Read books about the transition to Kindergarten. (see the list of titles below on the Books and Other Resources Tab)
  • Attend Kindergarten Parent Information Sessions and Kindergarten Round Up
  • Work closely with your child’s Kindergarten teacher. He/she is your partner!
  • Make sure your child’s teacher has the information he/she needs about your child to maximize a positive learning experience.
  • Get in the habit of checking your child’s backpack or folder each night for communications from the school.
  • Registration for After School Programming opens in August for the Fall session. Check out the Expanded Learning Collective’s Program Directory to search for after school options.
